My name is Ulf and I am a mechanical engineer from Germany and I moved to Houston in 2006. Naturally, I like engines, vehicles, anything that goes fast … or slow, like my tractor. I was on a quest for an antique Porsche tractor for years, until my dad was an able to locate the perfect one near my hometown in Germany. Finally in 2021, it was shipped from Germany to Texas.
For the holiday season, I conduct a few private-party hayrides to enjoy the seasonal display of lights in the Woodland Heights (home of the famous “Lights-in-the-Heights”). I donate these rides to local charities to benefit our community, including: The Parish School, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, and more. All proceeds go directly to the institutions.
While, I provide the tractor and conduct the rides, it’s a true neighborhood effort to make this happen: the trailer, hay bales, lights all are provided by different neighbors.
Lights-in-the-Heights (LITH) is on the 2nd Saturday in December (14-Dec-24) and I conduct my rides within 1-week of LITH event (excluding the LITH Saturday, as the roads will be closed). All rides start and end at the Norhill Esplanade, generally starting at 7pm.
Each ride is about 45mins and can accommodate ~15 people.
After World War II, Porsche’s engineering expertise were leveraged to help rebuild a continent largely devastated and destroyed. Between 1956 and 1963, about120,000 Porsche tractors were manufactured to assist farmers across Germany with a powerful and affordable workhorse to plow their fields and rebuild their country. This was an essential step in the industrial rebirth in Germany, also known as “Wirtschaftswunder.”
A small fraction of the Porsche tractors even made it to the US. All tractors were air-cooled 4-stroke diesel engines, ranging from a 1-cylinder model to 4 cylinders and all of them were painted red. This tractor is a 3-cylinder 308 Super Diesel model, built in 1960.
